  • Anthony Bourdain's death impacts local community

Within the last month and a half DJ / Producer Avicii, fashion designer Kate Spade, and celebrity chef / television host Anthony Bourdain all have taken their own life. It was a shock to her fans and renewed discussions about mental health awareness. But Dr. Schuchat said the decrease was minor for a state with a high suicide rate.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and just one of three leading causes of death that's on the rise, according to the CDC. The others are Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses.

Anne Shuchat M.D.is principal director at CDC.

"We can't rationalize an irrational mind", she said. The state's senior rate of suicide is still almost double that of the rest of the United States according to a 2018 report by the United Health Foundation.

Guns were the most common method used for suicide, accounting for nearly half of the people who died. Combined, Minnesota's rate grew to 15 suicides per 100,000 residents.

"But please listen to me- from someone who is telling you that she's been where you are- when I say that SUICIDE IS NOT THE RIGHT CHOICE".

Misty Vaughan Allen, a suicide-prevention coordinator at the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), told Newsweek that the department's work with the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention has helped lower the rate of suicide in the state.

In New Orleans, researchers led by Orleans Parish Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Rouse also recently studied the high rates of suicide in the city even a decade after Hurricane Katrina. During the study period, rate increases ranged from just under 6 percent in DE to over 57 percent in North Dakota. Finding economic circumstances was a major contributing factor, especially during the Great Recession (2008).

This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported spikes in suicide rates across the nation.

The CDC notes that suicide is rarely caused by a single factor or life event; and in fact, more than half of those who died by suicide actually did not have a known diagnosed mental health condition at the time of death (54%), according to the report. They said coroners' reports from across the country indicate that suicides often follow relationship or financial problems, substance abuse and health crises.

The coalition is working to connect people with prevention resources.

Mental Health Association Oklahoma offers free one-hour educational programs for groups in the community on QPR - question, persuade, refer - in how to handle a potential suicidal person.

The CDC report recommends increased cooperation and communication between government and the private sector.

Risk of suicide increases when media stories use more dramatic or graphic headlines or images, repeatedly report on the same suicide, explicitly describe the suicide method, and dramatize the death through romanticized headlines or by showing the site of the suicide and pictures of those who are grieving, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention says.

KTVU spoke with Courtney Brown from San Francisco Suicide Prevention Center to ask her more about the CDC study.
