It says the iPhone, which has contributed to 86% of Apple's revenue growth over the past five years, will make up just 22% of the company's revenue growth over the next five.

The reported memo to suppliers is yet another milepost in Apple's transition from a hardware company to a more services-based business. Apple reportedly asked the supply chain to ship parts related to the OLED screens earlier to avoid the delay that forced Apple to release the iPhone X in November previous year, two months after the launch of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

With the rumored 20% cut in supply chain orders, it would appear that Apple is targeting production of 80 million phones for its three new models.

Apple shares dropped 0.9% to 191.70 on the stock market today. Analysts suspect that the $1,000 iPhone X may be hurting demand, even though it was the best-selling smartphone in early 2018.

Apple is preparing to introduce three new iPhones in the fall, according to the report.

Apple reported iPhone unit sales of 52.2 million in its most recent quarter, slightly below the Thomson Reuters consensus estimate of 52.3 million.

Kuo said that Apple is likely to launch a 6.5-inch OLED "IPhone X Plus", a second generation of iPhone X and an iPhone with a 6.1 inch screen.

US -based supplier Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O), Micron Technology (MU.O) Intel (INTC.O), Broadcom Inc (AVGO.O) and Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O) were all down between 1 percent and 4 percent.

"I am not overly concerned. about the lower supply speculations", he said. "Apple is doing enough in general to keep the ball moving forward", Forte said.

A supply chain source told the Asian news agency that Apple requested Foxconn and Pegatron to begin assembly in July for the OLED devices.
