China's Xi touts Putin ties as United States tensions bring them closer

China is ready to work with Russian Federation and make unremitting efforts to consolidate high-level mutual trust, expand cooperation in all areas, deepen people-to-people exchanges and mutual learning, enhance global coordination and cooperation, pass down the concept of everlasting friendship from generation to generation, continuously enrich the meaning of the two countries' strategy of coordination, and carry forward and renew bilateral ties day by day, so as to benefit the two peoples, Xi said.

"Both share scepticism towards American hegemony, and distrust US intentions". That same month, Xi was given a path to indefinite rule when the the Communist-led rubber-stamp parliament lifted presidential term limits.

"We both believe that the current trade protectionism has increased, and there are many uncertainties in the recovery of the world economy".

He also reminisced to a Chinese broadcaster early this week about celebrating his birthday with Xi in 2013: "I won't hide it, we had a shot of vodka and sliced some sausage".

After the talks, Xi and Putin signed a joint statement, witnessed the signing of bilateral cooperation agreements and met the press.

Putin told reporters on Friday that the two leaders had discussed the situation on the Korean peninsula. "I see this as an acknowledgement and an evaluation of Russia's efforts to develop a comprehensive strategic partnership with China", he said, making only passing mention of "our personal friendship".

Maria Repnikova, assistant professor of global communication at Georgia State University, told CNN that there is an element of political play-acting to their public displays of mutual admiration.

For its part, Russian Federation allowed China to show the US that it had "other options" in worldwide negotiations.

They have also sought to strengthen the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a regional grouping they created, which meets this weekend.

China is willing to work with the other SCO member states, including Russian Federation, to take the Qingdao summit as an opportunity to further carry forward the "Shanghai Spirit" and ensure the healthy and stable development of the SCO, Xi noted.

Asia Times anticipates this year's SCO meeting could be much more successful than the 17 previous outings because relations between Russian Federation and China have improved so dramatically.

Mr. Putin told CGTN that the SCO had "small" objectives when it was founded two decades ago but that it was now evolving into a larger global force.
