  • Serena’s fate in hands of doctors

The most informed and Sharapova had to play for a place in the quarterfinals of a Grand slam - her rival from the United States Serena Williams got a hand injury and could not play.

Serena Williams of the USA celebrates after victory over Australia's Ashleigh Barty during their women's singles second round match on day five of The Roland Garros 2018 French Open tennis tournament in Paris.

The Frenchwoman briefly threatened a comeback when she pulled a break back for 5-3 after saving four match points, but then sent a routine forehand wide on the fifth match point in the following game.

When asked at the press conference if she has any idea when she'll be able to train again and whether she will be OK to play at Wimbledon (which starts July 2), Williams explained that she won't know until she gets her MRI results and other feedback from medical professionals.

Since Tuesday last week, she had played six matches in six days, with her singles duties alternating with doubles alongside sister Venus. The 31-year-old Russian player's opponent in the Round of 8, Garbine Muguruza of Germany also had an easy fourth-round match after Lesia Tsurenko was forced to retire injured at 2-0 down in the opening set. The Romanian beat Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-1 to advance to her third quarter-finals at Roland Garros.

However, the big story from Paris on Monday focused on a match that didn't even go ahead after three-time Roland Garros champion Williams withdrew from her last-16 clash with long-time rival Sharapova.

Williams said she first was troubled by her pectoral muscle during the best performance of her return, a 6-3, 6-4 win in the third round against 11th-seeded Julia Goerges on Saturday.

17 - minutes needed by Daria Kasatkina to complete her win over second seed Caroline Wozniacki after their match was interrupted on Sunday night. This is a match for which I am always ready.

Days Gone Release Date Revealed
The company announced that its post-apocalyptic biker adventure is due on the PlayStation 4 on February 22, 2019. It looks like a challenge, as they tend to travel in fast-moving hordes, much like the zombies in World War Z.

Sharapova was playing at Roland Garros for the first time since 2015.

There were no such fireworks this time, though, and as Kerber exhausted Halep sealed a 6-7 (2/7) 6-3 6-2 victory. She will next play 10th-seeded Sloane Stephens.

Muguruza will face world number one Simona Halep, who got the better of Angelique Kerber over three sets, in the semi-final. This is 30-year-old's second time in the Round of 8 in French Open, last time being in 2012.

The two players are coming back from time away - Williams after having a baby daughter; Sharapova after a doping ban.

Halep dodged two match points to deny Kerber 6-3 4-6 9-7 in a cliffhanger at Melbourne Park in January, leaving the German eyeing revenge in Paris. It will be their 22nd head-to-head meeting.

200 - wins on tour for Rafael Nadal.

Williams had described Sharapova's book "Unstoppable", in which the Russian claimed the American hated her for beating her in the 2004 Wimbledon final and reducing her to "guttural sobs" as "100 percent hearsay".
