Macron came to Ottawa ahead of the G7 summit in part to talk strategy with Trudeau on how to deal with a mercurial president who likes to be liked.

"The American President may not mind being isolated", Macron wrote on Twitter, "but neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be". "Because these 6 countries represent values, they represent an economic market which has the weight of history behind it and which is now a true worldwide force", French President Emmanuel Macron Tweeted Thursday.

Europe and hosts Canada warned US President Donald Trump on Thursday that they will not be intimidated at the G7 summit, despite fears that a trade war will weaken the Western alliance.

Sacrificing some of the protections for the relatively small dairy and poultry sector may be the price to pay for saving what's left of Canada's diminishing access to the massive USA market for everything else we produce.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed cynicism earlier this week about her prospects for the G7 summit, slyly faulting the Trump administration for its abandoning of old allegiances.

It also comes hours after Trudeau said that it is "inconceivable and quite frankly insulting" that the Trump administration would invoke national security in justifying the tariffs.

The two leaders also dismissed as absurd Trump's assertion of national security concerns.

The White House subsequently announced the President would be leaving on Saturday, before the summit formally ends, to fly to Singapore for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Canada has countered with a plan to impose tariffs of its own on USA metals and other consumer goods.

He claims the U.S. has always been the loser in worldwide trade and that he is determined the right the balance, starting with the tariffs.

We've been hit with tariffs on steel and aluminum even though the United States sells us far more of these products than we sell them. Breaking-not withdrawing, but breaking-the nuclear treaty with Iran and six other nations, reinforced the idea that the United States would act on Trump's whim, with no regard to law or alliances.

"The global trade system is broken and President Trump is trying to fix it. That's the key point".

The War of 1812 was a conflict fought between U.S. and United Kingdom and their respective allies, when the White House was burnt down by the British. "G-7 sherpa and deputy assistant to the president for worldwide economic affairs Everett Eissenstat will represent the United States for the remaining G-7 sessions", White House Press Secretary SarahSanders said in a statement.

Canada is flatly rejecting Donald Trump's suggestion to reinstate Russian Federation in the G7, four years after it was expelled from the group of industrialized nations for annexing Ukraine's Crimea.

This year, if members can overcome their differences on trade and Iran, the summit offers some scope for unity on issues such as girls' education, gender violence and chemical weapons.

Canada has made ridding the world's oceans of plastic pollution a signature issue and it is a central theme of the summit.

But what is the G7, and why is the outlook for this year's meeting so glum?

At last year's summit in Sicily, Mr Trump would not agree to sign a closing statement on climate change and withdrew the United States from the Paris agreement days later.
