It said the airstrike was carried out by Russian warplanes and is so far the deadliest in Idlib province this year.

The Observatory said the number could rise, as some victims were still under rubble and some of the wounded were in critical condition.

Injured civilians were taken to nearby hospitals while civil defense units carried out a search and rescue operation in the area.

Air strikes in northwestern Syria on Thursday, thought to have been carried out by Russian Federation, killed 44 civilians including five children, according to a Britain-based monitor.

Violent clashes were ongoing in Albu Kamal, which lies in the Euphrates Valley in eastern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

Northwestern Idlib region is the largest populated area of Syria still in the hands of groups opposed to the Damascus regime of Bashar al Assad.
