And while his bellicosity and volatility has deeply strained relations between the USA and its historic allies, Trump insisted that he had terrific relationships with the G7 leaders, though before arriving at the summit he had unleashed a tweetstorm against some of them.

Trump added to the disunity before his arrival at the Quebec resort town of La Malbaie on Friday when he called for Russian Federation to be readmitted into the informal annual gathering of seven advanced economies.

"Canada's position is absolutely clear".

He said he could tell from the smiles of European leaders at the G7 that they knew that "the gig is up" and that they would negotiate terms with Washington.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel created a storm on the internet when she shared a picture from the G-7 Summit held in Canada on her official Instagram account on Saturday.

"This used to be the G8, not the G7, then something happened", Trump said in reference to Moscow's suspension from the group in March 2014, over the secession of Crimea from Ukraine. "It is in the interests of all". A subsequent visit in April this year warranted only a working lunch for the German leader, several days after fellow European Union leader Macron got the full, formal state dinner treatment from Trump.

As Toronto Star reporter Daniel Dale observed, Trump spent much of the G7 summit "painting a highly inaccurate tariff picture-wrongly suggesting everyone else has high tariffs while US has none".

By ordering his representatives to back out of the communique, Trump appeared to be asserting his oft-stated aim of upsetting the status quo whether by pulling out of the global climate accord or the worldwide nuclear deal with Iran or threats to scrap the North American Free Trade Agreement. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron were especially vocal ahead of Trump's arrival.

But by insisting on re-negotiating every five years, Trump is diametrically opposed with Canada, which says the sunset clause would create perpetual uncertainty and harm long-term investment.

Putin, however, voiced his support for Trump's summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on Tuesday. Rouhani also extended his appreciation to Beijing and Moscow for continuing their support of the nuclear deal.

"This isn't the 1930s where everybody levied a lot of tariffs on everybody else", Kirkegaard said.

Following his announcement that the US would be pulling its endorsement of the joint statement, Trump took another jab at Trudeau in a second tweet.

But Sasse said Trump's complaints that other countries have taken advantage of the United States are unfounded, adding that he recommended "less whining on the global stage".

Despite the tough talk, diplomats have described the ongoing discussions as "cordial and productive".

The US president accused other states of "robbing" his country through their trade policies. "Everyone agreed, including President Trump", the official said on Friday, without elaborating.

However, before the acrimony spilled out into the public, Chancellor Angela Merkel tried to lighten the mood by cracking a joke with the U.S. leader.

"I highlighted directly to the president that... it's kind of insulting, and I highlighted that it was not helping in our renegotiation of NAFTA, and that it would be with regret, but it would be with absolute certainty and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1", Trudeau said at the press conference following the summit.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who met Trump as well, tweeted: "Pursuing the conversation".
