This marked the first Montreal race that a Ferrari driver won the pole position since Michael Schumacher took the first grid back in 2001. Mercedes sent him into the pits early to deal with the issue but unusually out of sorts at a track where he has won six times, he was then jumped during the stop by Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and a race that had quickly become a damage-limitation exercise was proving to be a real struggle.

Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes was second followed by the Red Bulls' Max Verstappen and Daniel Riciardo, the victor two weeks ago in Monaco.

The only other drivers not to finish were Brendon Hartley and home driver Lance Stroll, who crashed in spectacular fashion at Turn 5 on the opening lap.

Hamilton, who was fifth on Sunday, fell from the top of the Formula One standings and now trails Vettel by one point, 121-120.

"Like every grand prix there's not one person to dedicate it to", said Vettel. "Gilles Villeneuve, the favourite driver of Enzo Ferrari".

"I was just really happy to finish", said Hamilton.

The team took some time to find its pace over the weekend with Vettel not fully at ease with the auto until qualifying when he found the set-up he wanted to deliver an impressive pole, from which he dictated the race and converted into an equally impressive win. "It's unbelievable. I said yesterday how much this place means to Ferrari and to have a race like we had today is unbelievable", said Vettel. It's a three-way fight, six cars can win races and you can't take anything for granted.

Toto Wolff says the Canadian GP weekend serves as a "major wake-up call" to Mercedes to get to grips with the "new reality" of F1's expanded battle for honours. "At the end I was just praying the vehicle stays fine, nothing would break, but it's been a really good weekend". It was the seventh race on the engine so it's seen its life.

Hamilton, who had a hard weekend, was unable to find the performance he wanted.

Verstappen's podium was his second of the year, and it eases some of the pressure he has felt with a series of mistakes that cost him and the Red Bull team in Azerbaijan and Monaco.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, the 2014 Canadian GP victor, is coming off a victory two weeks ago in Monaco. For me, it was pretty straightforward, and in terms of strategy we did what we wanted to do.

It was Ferrari's first win in Canada since 2004 and came from their first pole there in 17 years.

Fernando Alonso would have hoped to make Q3 in his 300th Grand Prix weekend, but he had to settle for P14 after finishing Q2 more than a second off the pace.
