Trump insists G7 trade talks 'extremely productive'

The director of the national economic council under the Trump administration, Larry Kudlow, said during a CNN interview that Justin Trudeau stabbed the U.S.in the with his comments during a press conference held after U.S. President Donald Trump left the summit.

Hours after Mr Trump withdrew his support for the joint statement and attacked Mr Trudeau, Mr Kudlow and trade adviser Peter Navarro drove the message home on Sunday morning news shows in an extraordinary assault on a close United States ally and neighbour.

Justin Trudeau and President Trump participate in the working session at the G7 summit on Friday. He accused Canada - America's second largest trading partner - of bungling the trade relationship between the countries and of trying to raise "protectionist barriers even higher" on Canadian products like maple syrup.

France released a statement on Sunday condemning President Donald Trump for withdrawing from a previously agreed-upon statement by all seven nations in the Group of Seven.

"He really kind of stabbed us in the back", Kudlow said.

He described Trudeau as "meek" and "dishonest" and rescinded his earlier promise to sign the communique traditionally issued following G7 summits.

President Trump was responding to Trudeau's remarks on trade between the USA and Canada, in which the prime minister warned his government would take retaliatory measures if new tariffs were introduced.

"What's not in good faith is when you leave there you fly out of there and the host Canadian Prime Minister starts taking whacks at you, potshots at you, on the eve of this Korean summit".

Some are calling it part of the "the Trump curse", how bad and embarrassing things seem to befall those critical of President Trump. "He is not going to permit any show of weakness on the trip to negotiate with North Korea".

Trudeau said Canada will enforce retaliatory tariffs because of Trump's actions.

Within minutes of the official release of the document, Trump attacked Trudeau online over what he described as the prime minister's "false statements" during the closing news conference - and the president announced the USA would no longer endorse the communique. And what did Trudeau do as soon as the plane took off from Canadian airspace, Trudeau stuck our president in the back.

Trudeau's remarks prompted Trump to pull out of a joint communique that was a fragile consensus on the trade dispute between Washington and its top allies, Kudlow said. "The Prime Minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the President", the office added. I believe that. John McCain believes it. there's a movement all over the world to look inward, not outward, and I think it's a mistake.

Mr Trudeau said he had reiterated to Mr Trump, who left the G7 meeting before it ended, that tariffs would harm industries and workers on both sides of the US-Canada border.

"Right now the President is actually driving our allies away from us", he said on CBS's "Face the Nation".
