Navarro was responding to host Chris Wallace's question about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's comments in a Saturday press conference after the two leaders met at this weekend's G7 Summit, which he described as a "stab in the back on the way out the door" that came after Trump left Canada for Singapore.

British Prime Minister Theresa May "is fully supportive" of Trudeau and his leadership, a senior United Kingdom government source said, while European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted: "There is a special place in heaven for @JustinTrudeau".

Ontario premier-designate Doug Ford is also among those setting aside his political differences with Trudeau, re-asserting today that he stands "shoulder to shoulder" with the prime minister on trade.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Twitter Saturday sought to counter the comments about Trudeau.

Mr Trump responded by tweeting en route to his next summit, in Singapore, that he had instructed United States officials "not to endorse the communique as we look at tariffs on automobiles".

A Trudeau spokesman, Cameron Ahmad, said last night that Mr Trudeau "said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public and in private conversations" with Mr Trump.

He said the move was based on Mr Trudeau's "false statements. and the fact that Canada is charging massive tariffs to our United States farmers, workers and companies".

In response, Trump attacked Trudeau on Twitter, calling him "dishonest & weak". Trudeau stuck our president in the back.

Last week, Canada hit back at Trump administration by announcing retaliatory tariffs on up to 16.6 billion Canadian dollars (12.8 billion US dollars) worth of USA steel and aluminum as well as a diverse list of other products.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Sunday he is unsure why the Trump administration is heavily focused on trade relations with Canada, being that the northern neighbor is one of the strongest allies of the U.S.

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", Trudeau said. One scene at the very beginning of the gathering of presidents and prime ministers of the biggest industrialised nations set the mood for facing the brash Trump.

In response, Canada, Mexico and the European Union said they were putting in place their own retaliatory measures.

Trump, who is in Singapore for meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, tweeted that "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal" and suggested that Canada is "bragging" in an unspecified release about benefiting from U.S. trade. "We have seen this with the climate agreement or the Iran deal". But even those vested in Canadian trade are not expected to come to Trudeau's defence as long as the USA economy is roaring. The G7 also includes Britain, Italy, France, Germany and Japan.

Kudlow said the USA participated in G7 talks and bilateral talks on Nafta in good faith and that Trump had been "charming".

Trump insisted relationships with allies were a "10" just before he left the summit.
