Trump had called Kim "Little Rocket Man" and threatened to unleash "fire and fury like the world has never seen" on North Korea as it conducted several ballistic missile tests in defiance of global warnings.
USA and North Korean negotiators met in a Singapore hotel on Monday, seeking to clarify the shape of Tuesday's summit, where Trump has said he intends to guided by instinct. "We have to get denuclearisation, we have to get something going".

Trump had earlier tweeted about the "excitement in the air!"
Chairman Kim thanked Singapore's organisation of the summit as if it was "their own family affair".
Korean Studies Institute director David Kang said: "The most we can hope to get out of this is that Kim and Trump find that they can have some working relationship".

Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire US mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the USA and the North.
But US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the two-hour meeting on Monday morning was "substantive and detailed". Again accusing the longtime US ally of unfair trade practices, he added: "Then Justin acts hurt when called out!"
A year ago the North carried out what was by far its most powerful nuclear test to date and launched a flurry of missiles - including two over Japan - while Trump threatened Pyongyang with "fire and fury" and Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged USA dotard". "Given the history of the way KCNA has reported, I think that is a sign for optimism".
"He would be there, he would be running his country, his country would be very rich", Trump said in May, noting that Libya "was a much different model" and not applicable in this case.
One analyst told Al Jazeera Trump will seek to promote his image as a deal-maker. Kim had his own harsh words, calling the president a "mentally deranged US dotard". That's what I do. How long will it take to figure out whether or not they are serious? "I said maybe in the first minute".
