Trump said last week that Rodman had not been invited to the summit.

"The nuclear testing has got them to the point where they now get this meeting", he said.

The North Korean leadership, including Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui has also taunted Washington, calling Vice President Mike Pence a "political dummy".

Mr. Trump's actions led to an extraordinary juxtaposition: an abrupt public feud and deterioration of ties between the USA and Canada at the same moment as warm words and a detente between the US and North Korea. Complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization, he told reporters, "is the only outcome that the United States will accept". Long-time United States allies like Canada and Germany protested Trump-backed tariffs on their exports, and threatened to retaliate with their own tariffs on U.S. products.

"North Korea has previously confirmed to us its willingness to denuclearize, and we are eager to see if those words prove honest", Pompeo said.

Mr Trump lashed out at his allies as part of a demonstration of strength as he flew into Singapore, according to a senior White House adviser. The two will later be joined by officials and have lunch together. Trump will hold a press conference and leave Singapore later Tuesday, the White House said, noting that negotiations "have moved more quickly than expected".

Exuding confidence, Trump said he has done relatively little formal preparation.

He's also repeatedly expressed his support for a meeting between Trump and Kim - even offering to facilitate it or serve as an ambassador of sorts.

Asked Saturday about his goals, he said, "Well, I think the minimum would be relationship".

After 'difficult' G7 summit, UK's May warns against unilateral action on trade
He continued: "So I'm not so sure a majority of Americans believe that globalization and free trade is in our interests". Trump", Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro said on Fox News this weekend, following the G7 summit in Quebec.

"We have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World", Trump tweeted from Air Force One en route to Singapore, predicting that counterpart Kim Jong Un "will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before".

Both Seoul and Washington have imposed sanctions on him in recent years.

Mr. Pompeo praised the G-7 nations for their help getting North Korea talks set up.

South Korea's Hankook Ilbo reported that Singapore recommended the St Regis, which hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping during his 2015 summit with Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, because it can be easily secured.

Kim Hee-hyun, 30, believes Kim has reached the conclusion that denuclearisation will be beneficial for his own prospects, but was wary about the cost of reunification.

"Wide-ranging and profound views on the issue of establishing new DPRK-US relations, the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean Peninsula, the issue of actualizing the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern" will be discussed, state-run KCNA reported early Monday.

"We will not be surprised by any scenario", said the official. "We now know they have a pretty good track record in these negotiations - a ideal track record of cheating every time, so that's the context we now face". The North has faced diplomatic and economic sanctions over its nuclear and ballistic weapons programs.

The president has said that he would be willing to guarantee the safety of Kim's regime - though it's not clear how he would back that up.

In part, these lowered expectations are a reflection of the extreme skepticism among many that the North can be persuaded to give up a nuclear programme it has stubbornly built over the decades, often in secrecy and despite intense sanctions, worldwide condemnation and widespread suffering among its people.

He initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States.
