Police operation over hostage situation in Paris

An armed man is believed to have seized at least one hostage in Rue des Petites Ecuries, with armed police and firefighters at the scene. However, police have said there was no indication that the incident was terrorism-related, according to CNN.

An armed man has taken hostages at a building in a northern district of Paris.

The man reportedly asked to speak to the Iranian embassy to deliver a message to the French government, Reuters reports. The attacker, who appeared to be brandishing a fake weapon, had doused his remaining two hostages in petrol, the source said.

There initially were three hostages, but one was reportedly freed shortly after the hostage-taking began at about 4 p.m.in the office of a startup, police union official Yves Lefebvre said.

Streets in the area have been sealed off by police cordons. "His demands were really vague and incoherent", said an interior ministry official.
