  • Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May told MPs that the G7 had been

US President Donald Trump attacked America's closest allies in a series of tweets after leaving the summit.

Trump had earlier lashed out at Canadian leader Justin Trudeau for what he said were "false statements" at a news conference and said the USA would not endorse the G7 communique.

While making no direct criticism of Mr Trump, she left no doubt that European Union nations will impose counter-measures on USA goods in response.

The blowup drew rebukes from nearly every other member of the G7 - a group containing the U.S., the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan - and raised the possibility for more back-and-forth trade restrictions. "The only people capable of persuading Trump to stop this are in the United States, but they have not hit anything like top gear", said one person close to the matter.

- Following Trump's departure from the G7 summit, Trudeau says in a press conference that he told the US president that his steel and aluminum tariffs were "kind of insulting", that Canada "will not be pushed around" and that it would not hesitate to impose retaliatory measures. But the diplomatic fireworks ended up even more spectacular than anticipated.

At a rare solo news conference before heading to Asia, Trump said he pressed for the G-7 countries to eliminate all tariffs, trade barriers and subsidies in their trading practices.

Trump and his deputies lashed out at Trudeau for telling a news conference at the end of the G7 conference that Canada would not be pushed around on tariffs - a point the Canadian prime minister had made several times before. He also said that because of Trudeau's comments, he instructed USA trade representatives to not sign the communique the G-7 leaders had agreed upon expressing the need for "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade".

"If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", Mr. Trump said.

As he flew from Canada to Singapore Saturday night, Trump took to Twitter to label Trudeau as "dishonest" and "weak".

"And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference...that's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did, and that comes right from Air Force One".

Krueger said the strong words most likely reflected the president's thinking.

Also in response, Larry Kudlow, director of the White House's National Economic Council, said on Sunday in an interview with CNN that Trudeau betrayed Trump with "polarizing" statements on US trade policy.

It was all smiles during a photo opportunity at the G7 Summit.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking Sunday to German public television, said she found Trump's tweet disavowing the G-7 statement "sobering" and "a little depressing".

French President Emmanuel Macron's office also slammed Trump's decision to reject the official communique and denounced the United States president's negotiating tactics.

"International cooperation can not be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks", Macron's statement said.

"So at this summit, we expressed deep disappointment at the unjustified decision of the United States to apply tariffs to steel and aluminium imports".

Canada's limited options mean "there is no magical Plan B", said University of Ottawa global affairs professor Patrick Leblond.

Trump suggested welcoming Russian Federation back into the group after being kicked out in 2014 for its illegal annexation of Crimea.

Asked what Trudeau did that amounted to betrayal, Kudlow criticized the Canadian leader for holding a press conference in which he called US tariffs "insulting".
