African Countries Vote Against Morocco's 2026 World Cup Bid

The 2026 World Cup is officially coming to the United States, Mexico and Canada, and a joint statement Wednesday indicates Denver will push to host matches in the quadrennial worldwide soccer tournament.

The joint bid received 134 votes to 65 for Morocco.

After considering separate bids for the 2026 World Cup, the federations that govern soccer in Mexico, Canada and the United States chose to launch a cooperative effort to host the tournament in April 2017.

The North American bid was in better shape to host the World Cup.

With Russia hosting in 2018 and Qatar in 2022, no countries from either Europe or Asia were allowed to bid for the 2026 tournament. The country hosted in 1970, but it also hosted in 1986 after it was originally awarded to Colombia, who couldn't host for economic reasons.

President Donald Trump has interfered in the voting process, much to FIFA's chagrin. The USA are set to host 60, while Canada and Mexico will have just 10 each.

The other chosen US cities are Arlington, Texas; Atlanta; Baltimore; Cincinnati; Denver; East Rutherford, New Jersey; Foxborough, Massachusetts; Houston; Inglewood or Pasadena, California; Kansas City, Missouri; Landover, Maryland; Miami; Nashville, Tennessee; Orlando, Florida; Philadelphia; Santa Clara, California; and Seattle.

US Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro speaks at the Fifa Congress in Moscow, Russia ahead of the vote. In the end it wasn't enough, and Americans fans can look forward to the return of soccer's greatest event in what can only be seen as a massive boost for the domestic game.

The decision was revealed at the FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday.

Interested in World Cup?

That suggests that North American bid leaders' promises to deliver a record $11 billion profit for the 2026 tournament are feasible. Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup, though it was the site of the 2015 Women's World Cup. "Why should we be supporting these countries when they don't support us (including at the United Nations)?"

It's unclear at the moment how travel will shake out and how far teams will have to travel for matches.

Following the poll results, Fouzi Lekjaa, head of the Moroccan Royal Football Federation (FRMF), emphasized "the determination of my country to continue to work for football...and to realize our dream some day of hosting the World Cup". In particular, Trump has been engaged in a high-profile dispute with Canadian President Justin Trudeau over steel and aluminum tariffs, which led to a contentious G7 summit last week. The United States and Canada did not qualify.

The proposal includes a huge spread of venues in the United States, from virtually all the major cities on the East and West Coast, to also Atlanta, Nashville, Tennessee, Orlando, Florida, Miami in the Southeast; and then Cincinnati, Ohio, Kansas City, Missouri, Dallas, Houston and Denver in the Midwest and Mountain West. Federation Internationale de Football Association will select up to 16 cities for matches.
