Egypt play down Mohamed Salah claims he will be ready vs Uruguay

13 June, 2018, 01:41 | Author: Heidi Alvarez
  • Salah is in a high-profile race to be fit for Egypt's World Cup opener against Uruguay on Friday

The 25-year-old Salah has not played since injuring his left shoulder in Liverpool's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid last month.

Egyptian fans will be crossing their fingers as medical staff are still unsure about whether or not talisman Mohamed Salah will be able to take to the field against Uruguay in the North African nation's 2018 Fifa World Cup opener.

On May 30, Egypt officials said Salah would be out for "not more" than three weeks, which would rule him out of the Uruguay match but put him in the frame for Russian Federation on June 19 and Saudi Arabia on June 25. Mohamed trained in Cairo, trained yesterday and is training today.

Following an exhausting 16-hour flight, the team faces another four hours on a plane for the game against Egypt, which will be played in Ekaterinburg.

Guillem Balague says Julen Lopetegui's appointment as Real Madrid manager came as a surprise, but insists fans will be happy. He'll now become the manager of a club for which he made one senior appearance and has worked as a B team coach in the past.

The South American side is expected to top their group, and Lawrenson believes that it will be hard for Egypt to advance to the round of 16, predicting hosts Russian Federation to finish behind Uruguay.

Salah, who scored 32 goals in 36 appearances for Liverpool and led his team to the Champions League final this season, is considered the main rival for Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the contest for the title of world's best footballer.

"Everything looks good. His condition is comfortable, but playing against Uruguay is uncertain", he said, via Goal. "He has the determination and enthusiasm to take part in the Uruguay match, but we can't say whether he will play or not four days ahead of the game", Leheta said.
