Ivanka Trump mocked for sharing ‘Chinese proverb’ that isn’t actually Chinese

Ivanka Trump on Monday tweeted a "Chinese proverb" to mark the historic meeting between Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong-un.
On popular social media sites like Weibo, tens of thousands of people discussed genuine Chinese sayings that might convey something similar to Trump's post.
But seconds later, the social media community started to point out there was little evidence to suggest the saying originated in China, reports the New York Times. Some said it could have been "Don't give advice while watching others playing a chess game".
The ridicule was present stateside, too, where conservative writer and ardent Trump critic Bill Kristol lambasted her over the proverb.
"Did you get that from a fortune cookie?" another netizen asked.
Larry Herzberg, a professor of Chinese at Calvin College in MI, said Ivanka's tweet was "yet one more example of Americans ascribing a quote to the Chinese, often to Confucius, when they don't really know the origin of the saying".

It's not the first time she has incorrectly described a quotation as Chinese.
Ivanka Trump has been mocked after sharing a quote on Twitter. Since then, the quote has gone through a number of variations and attributions.
"It sounds more legitimate and credible to pronounce a quote coming from the ancient civilisation of China".
"Three minutes of googling suggests this is a fake Chinese Proverb".
The quote also has been attributed to Irish author George Bernard Shaw.
The blog Quote Investigator has found that the saying first emerged in a 1903 Chicago magazine in reference to innovation during that time.
