Merkel: EU will act against USA tariffs on steel, aluminium

"We won't allow ourselves be ripped off again and again".

The German leader said she had no idea of Donald Trump's motive for suggesting to revive the G8 format.

His remarks come a day after Chancellor Angela Merkel rebuffed President Donald Trump's sustained criticism of Germany's export prowess, arguing that the US runs a trade surplus with Europe when services are included.

However, Merkel avoided giving a definitive answer to the question of whether Germany will stop seeing the United States as an "important partner".

Emmanuel Macron has warned Donald Trump about "fits of anger" after the U.S. president refused to endorse a joint communique of G7 leaders.

"The withdrawal by tweet is, of course, sobering and a bit depressing as well", she told Germany's Anne Will talk show on Sunday evening.

Despite tensions over Trump's intended trade tariffs the United States and its G7 allies had put on an apparent show of unity at the end of the tense summit. But Trudeau had simply reiterated points he'd made before: that Canada planned dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs in response to Trump's new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.

Donald Trump talks about G7 post Singapore summit
Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. US President Donald Trump is seated amid a crowd of officials.

We will act too, says the German Chancellor. We have a very big trade deficit with Canada.

Meanwhile, Trump's off to Singapore to meet up with North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un who landed in the country earlier today.

The group managed a common statement in which they agreed to disagree on some issues, only to have Trump disavow the document in a tweet after leaving the meeting.

The president also commented on his relationship with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, saying he was surprised by Mr. Trudeau's post-summit comments.

The French president's office said in a statement: "International co-operation can not be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks". Speaking on the condition of anonymity a Canadian official told national broadcaster CBC that not only had Trudeau made these remarks prior to the meeting, on USA television last week, he had also informed Trump of his position before he went on air.

Although Trump and Kudlow have since claimed Trudeau "stabbed us in the back" and was the reason for the U-turn, it is Trump's actions that other G7 leaders appeared to find frustrating.

Looking focused or exasperated depending on the viewer's interpretation, Merkel is flanked by British Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron, their faces largely obscured. We are sticking to them and whoever reneges on them is showing incoherence and inconsistency.
