Mistake-free Verstappen tops Canada practice

Hamilton is concerned that doing this race with an old engine that will have lost a small amount of power over its life could be enough to make it hard to contend for victory at a track where he has won six times in 10 races.

Verstappen, who started from the rear of the grid at the Monaco Grand Prix after a crash in final practice, offered the promise of something much better in Montreal, taking full advantage of an upgraded power unit to put down two polished performances on the 2.7 mile (4.34 km) sun-splashed Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Ricciardo admitted that it was decided early to start the race using the Hypersoft Pirelli tyre opposed to the Ultrasoft that both Scuderia Ferrari and both Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport drivers will start on, and it should enable him and team-mate Max Verstappen to be aggressive in the opening laps and with the strategy.

Throughout the weekend in Montreal, however, Max has been back at his best, leading the three practice sessions and then producing an excellent lap in Q3 to take third on the grid for the race, despite his rivals upping their engine modes.

"I am not happy with sixth, but am I happy with the way I drove and actually what we did, yes". He closed in on Bottas towards the end as the Mercedes man let off, while Ricciardo gapped Hamilton behind with a series of strong laps while the reigning world champion nursed an engine issue.

"I did it in '14", said Ricciardo, referring to his maiden F1 win in Canada when starting from the same position. But I think we are not too far away so just general it was a positive day.

Ricciardo's auto has spent more time in the garage than Verstappen's this weekend, but Ricciardo does not think he can use too much of that as an excuse for the gap to the Dutchman.

The Dutchman also put his teammate Daniel Ricciardo in the shade by over a tenth-and-a-half as the Monaco race victor struggles to find the same pace around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. "With what we had, I feel I did a not bad job".

"Yeah, that was a pretty good day for me, but I think Mercedes looked very fast in the longer runs", he said in a brief post-session comment.

Indeed Ricciardo could be thrown to the back of the pack, dependant on the number of engine parts his Red Bull team have to change. "I think we need a little bit more time to get everything together and then we'll see where we are". "Merc are going to be quick tomorrow - I would say they're the ones to beat at the moment".

"Obviously if something happened in practice, we'd probably have to take one". The one from the failure in China is alive, hence we haven't got a penalty. "Now we just have to break it down and get it in the best position for (qualifying)".
