Net neutrality rollback: FCC chairman Ajit Pai responds to critics

  • This week could reshape the internet Net neutrality rules expire and AT&T-Time Warner decision is due

We talked to the owner of Mad Mike's Computer Repair, who says that how much ISPs decide to block or slow down websites and apps may depend on whether people keep or leave their providers.

The FCC is nearly certain to challenge Washington as the agency asserted preemption, in which federal laws have precedent over state ones.

Brian Black started VMC Chinese parts almost three years ago with business growing quickly, "We sell parts for Chinese-manufactured ATVs, scooters, UTVs".

The two events in Washington could lead to further consolidation of wireless, cable and content giants, public-interest advocates say.

However, companies are likely to drop these self-imposed restrictions; they will just wait until people aren't paying a lot of attention, said Marc Martin, a former FCC staffer who is now chairman of communications practice at the law firm Perkins Coie. "I think that's insane".

Zero-rating programs weren't specifically barred under the now-defunct net neutrality protections.

There are many outspoken opponents of the FCC's move, though, including state governments, tech companies, rights groups and attorneys general. His trips to places such Dahlonega, Ga., a city of roughly 6,500, illustrated that Americans feel they are "on the wrong side of the digital divide" and lack broadband options, he said in an interview in his eighth-floor office at the commission. This, according to Pai, "will allow consumers to make an informed decision about which Internet service provider is best for them".

Net neutrality has overwhelming public support, noted industry experts.

Beginning Monday, however, the USA government no longer explicitly prohibits those practices.

The Federal Trade Commission will be able to investigate if internet providers engage in anticompetitive behavior.

The Federal Communications Commission voted to repeal Net Neutrality in December.

Pai said "misinformation" was behind some of the visceral online reaction he faced. Senate Democrats forced a vote to restore net neutrality through the Congressional Review Act in May. Like when we start to see plans from the telecoms that take advantage of the lack of net neutrality rules, is it possible we're going to like them? VTel wrote to say that "regulating broadband like legacy telephone service would not create any incentives for VTel to invest in its network". In a dramatic video, she called on the House to save net neutrality in order to protect the "free and open" internet. "They just don't want to own the fact that they want to change this", Miller said. Frank Pallone, N.J., the top Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said in an interview.

Since it is now legal for companies to speed up and slow down their services as they wish, customers could be forced to choose between an overall slower service or higher costs.

Q. Is my Internet service about to slow to a crawl, like some activists claim? "I would love to have one uniform, robust federal standard protecting net neutrality, but given that the FCC has left a void, the states have to fill it". It's also being defied at the state level, where the rules are being replaced by executive orders and legislation.

Today, those net neutrality rules were officially rolled back.

With Net Neutrality coming to an end, there are fewer rules governing how internet service providers can operate.

At the FCC, Pai said the agency is "keeping all options on the table". It would also increase costs for consumers, as content providers were forced to pass along fees.

The verdict on the merger could have broad significance.

He wrote that the biggest US internet companies - Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google and Microsoft - controlled much of the online infrastructure, from app stores to operating systems to cloud storage to almost all of the online ad business. Democratic commissioners Mignon Clyburn and Jessica Rosenworcel voted against the repeal. But what is net neutrality, and what does its repeal mean for you?
