Alex Iovine, 26, and her girlfriend Emma Pichl, 24, were riding with the auto service on Saturday evening when the driver suddenly pulled over and asked them to leave. The couple was heading back to Manhattan on Saturday after celebrating a friend's birthday at a Brooklyn bar.
"The middle seat was open". "We had leaned over and peck kissed, and then a couple of minutes later, the driver abruptly pulled over". "That's genuinely all it was". "You can't do that in the auto". "It went from shock to like anger", passenger Alex Iovine said.
Once over the bridge, Iovine said the driver suddenly pulled over and told the women to get out of the vehicle. "But that's not what was going on here".
"We got over the Manhattan Bridge into the city".
In video posted to Iovine's Facebook page, you hear the women asking the driver, "What's the issue?"
"It's disrespectful", the driver said. "You don't do that". "'That's illegal"." The cell phone video also shows the driver claiming that what the couple did was disrespectful.
The women then responded by stating that kissing isn't illegal. "You don't do that here in the auto". According to a screenshot of his profile, provided to CNN by Pichl, he had a 4.67 rating and received dozens of commendations on the app for "excellent service".
El Boutari told the Daily News that the couple had been acting "crudely" in his auto even before the kiss. "We always thought we lived in this untouchable New York City bubble where LGBTQ is so accepted", Pichl said.
The recording began as one of the women asked the driver, who had exited the auto, what the issue was.
When he forced them to step out of the vehicle, the couple started recording.
Iovine told the Daily News they didn't behave inappropriately. Elbotari said that he would do the same for a straight couple, but admitted that he has less tolerance for a same-sex couple. However, the agency told the Daily News that it has not received complaints about the driver in the past and that it has launched its own investigation. The riders and the driver reported the incident to Uber, she said. TLC spokesman Allan Fromberg says "we reached out to them (the women) immediately and commenced an investigation".
An Uber spokesperson said, "Uber does not tolerate any form of discrimination, and we have reached out to the rider regarding her experience".
"I think they don't belong driving period", Khosrowshahi told The Post in a wide-ranging interview Monday, referring to the Saturday incident which was partially caught on video.
"Why are we not allowed to kiss in an Uber?"
"It's an unfortunate circumstance and we will do everything we can for that not to repeat".
