Trump declares there is ‘no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea’

There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea ...

He also announced an unexpected end to US-South Korea military drills.

"He made very clear that the condition precedent for the exercises not to proceed was a productive, good-faith negotiations being ongoing and at the point it's concluded that they're not, the President's commitment to not have those joint exercises take place will no longer be in effect", Pompeo said.

Now it appears the North Koreans are trying to seize on this confusion to put forth a favorable summit narrative - or rather, one even more favorable than "U.S. president legitimizes North Korean dictator".

Even as Washington agreed to suspend joint USA and South Korean military exercises as the country pursues peace with North Korea and the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, Seoul is modernizing its military and purchasing new missiles and fighter aircraft.

Is this summit a game-changer for Asia and the rest of the world? "(North Korea) and the development of the situation".

According to the Reuters poll, 26 percent of Americans said they believe that both the usa and North Korea will meet their commitments under the agreement. Trump phoned South Korean President Moon Jae-in after leaving Singapore to brief him on the discussions. "I am confident that they understand what we're prepared to do, the handful of things that we're likely not prepared to do".

Before leaving himself, Trump tossed out pronouncements on USA alliances, human rights and the nature of the accord that he and Kim had signed. Mr Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, then plans to fly to Beijing to update the Chinese government on the talks.

Mr Trump insisted that strong verification of denuclearisation would be included in a final agreement, saying it was a detail his team would begin sorting out with the North Koreans next week.

After Meeting With Kim, Trump Calls Media "Country's Biggest Enemy"
Talks are to be led on the US side by Pompeo and, according to the agreement, a "relevant, high-level" North Korean official. North Korea and South Korea have the most riding on a peace deal, but China , which is next door, is probably next in line.

Despite the confusion and disappointment among some, the summit managed to, for a time at least, reset a relationship that has always been characterised by bloodshed and threats. North Korea has long objected to the drills as a security threat.

Jacqueline An, a Toronto lawyer, has represented many exiles over the years - and helped win the release last year of Hyeon Soo Lim, a Canadian pastor who was given a life sentence with hard labour for allegedly "meddling" in North Korean state affairs.

China has repeatedly called for a "freeze-for-freeze" or "dual suspension" initiative, in North Korea suspends its nuclear program in exchange for the US and South Korea to suspend their joint military exercises in the region.

It follows a day of historic talks at Singapore's Capella Hotel, on Sentosa Island - the first meeting between a sitting US President and a North Korean leader. Trump showed off his new tattoo. Trump declared he and Kim had developed "a very special bond", and seemed to delight in giving Kim a glimpse of the presidential limousine.

"We had a historic meeting and chose to leave the past behind", Kim said as he and Trump signed the joint statement, adding, "The world will see a major change".

A spokesman for U.S. Forces Korea said they've received "no updated guidance" in regards to military exercises.

There are usually two sets of exercises every year, in spring and autumn, involving a massive number of troops and military hardware. Both sides promised to push the process forward quickly, and Trump and Kim exchanged invitations to each other to visit their nations' capitals.

The fact that the two leaders "can sit together and have equal talks has important and positive meaning, and is creating a new history", Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters.

In Japan, the prospect of cancelled U.S. -South Korean military exercises, framing it as Trump agreeing to a request from Kim.
