White House says Trump plans early summit departure

President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un concluded an extraordinary nuclear summit Tuesday with the US president pledging unspecified "security guarantees" to the North and Kim recommitting to the "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

The cancellation is seen as a significant concession to North Korea.

At the time, Trump's daughter Ivanka was officially visiting South Korea, as was Gina Haspel, the then deputy Central Intelligence Agency chief, and Andrew Kim, the head of the CIA's Korea Mission Center.

Kim said that the "world will see a major change" and he and Trump "decided to leave the past behind" as they put pen to paper.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News's George Stephanopoulos and at a press briefing Trump announced that he was suspending military exercises conducted annually in South Korea by the USA military.

Pressed on the fate of Otto Warmbier, the United States student who died after being held in North Korea, Trump said relations started to change with Pyongyang at around the time of Warmbier's death.

Former U.S. ambassador Bill Richardson told VOA he is concerned about no verification of what the North Koreans will do about missile technology in the DPRK, no detail of nuclear reduction, the peace treaty and human rights. "China is trying to play President Trump through North Korea".

Few people could take over North Korea at the age of 26 and "run it tough", Trump mused.

"Featuring President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un, in a meeting to remake history, to shine in the sun", the narrator says. He had a face-to-face meeting with a sitting USA president ― an accomplishment that neither his grandfather or father could achieve. "Talking to dictators is one thing, embracing them is another", Biden blasted of the deal he said does not advantage the USA or make us safer. The former refers to dismantling North Korea's nuclear weapon capability, while the latter can include the eventual elimination of the US nuclear umbrella on the Korean Peninsula.

"Yesterday's photo op doesn't change the fact that a nuclear-armed North Korea is a threat to the security of the United States, our allies, and the world".

Kim departed the Capella hotel on the resort island of Sentosa shortly after signing the document, while Trump is expected to hold a news conference later in the day before returning to Washington.

Perhaps most importantly, Trump did not succeed in getting Kim to clarify his definition of "denuclearization".

"We have right now 32,000 soldiers in South Korea. Think of it from the real estate perspective".

Rodman, who expects Tuesday's summit to be a success, said the outcome would be dependent on the ability of the two leaders to strike up a personal relationship. "At the end of the day, this is our last best chance to end this conflict without a war".

"There can only be two results: one of moving back, or one of moving forward", the narrator says.

Trump's scorecard is far more mixed.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise described positive steps from the meeting, such as Kim saying he's willing to take steps toward denuclearization.
