Health officials say that suicides of several high-profile people have led to an increase in volume to suicide prevention helplines.

Every 31 seconds someone in the United States tries to take their lives and every 12 minutes someone dies from suicide.

Suicide rates from 1999 to 2016 increased in all age groups younger than 75 years, with the greatest increase shown in "middle-aged adults" aged 45 to 64 years.

Men die by suicide 3.53 x more often than women. All states except Nevada saw an increase of at least 6 percent.

Kansas ranked 19th overall in the number of suicides, but had the fifth highest rate of increase in suicides, following North Dakota, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Utah. In some cases, it may not be necessary to give any more detail other than suicide as a cause of death.

"We have a serious, national problem in terms of adequate recognition of psychiatric illnesses and their treatment", psychiatrist and neurochemist John Mann, who studies the causes of depression and suicide a Columbia University, told Business Insider earlier this month. He says that the clinic typically takes in an average of 125 calls per day. Locally, all we have to do is look at the suicide deaths in our county jails to see a small sampling of a larger problem. The Centers for Disease Control also reported a almost 30 percent increase in suicide deaths in the United States from 1999 until 2016. Rates increased significantly among males in 34 states, and females in 43 states.

In addition, the stigma attached to mental illness lingers and keeps millions of Americans from the professional help they need.

As news of two celebrity suicides has upset many people around the world this week, it has presented a possibly lethal risk to a segment of the population: those already struggling with their own mental health issues.

Each year, about 4,000 people in this country die of suicide, according to the Canadian Mental Health Association. The report found that the most common contributing factors include relationship problems, financial issues, substance abuse, physical health problems. My aunt Jackie made a decision to take her own life in 2015. Both of those are assumptions, and until we have hard data, it won't be clear as to why suicides deaths are spiking.

Many of us know someone close to us who has committed or attempted suicide. She is a licensed mental health counselor and oversees statewide efforts to help those affected by suicide. Don't delay in getting someone you love help.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741. We all need that.
