  • Heavy clashes near Yemen's Hodeidah as United Nations seeks ceasefire

The coalition backing Yemen government troops has been closing in on Hodeidah after accusing Houthi rebels of smuggling weapons through the port.

The RSADF has repeatedly intercepted ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis to target Saudi civilian and populated areas. "We are continuously working with the International Committee for Red Cross to provide the best environment and circumstances for the work of United Nations organisation".

"I hope that there will be a way to avoid the military confrontation in Hodeida", Guterres told reporters.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday called on all parties "to honour their commitments to work with the UN".

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Yemen's foreign minister at UN headquarters in NY amid warnings that an attack on rebel-held Hodeida was imminent.

The letter comes after the United Nations and humanitarian groups reported over the weekend they were warned by the United Arab Emirates to evacuate Hodeida by Tuesday.

The war has killed more than 10,000 people, displaced three million and unleashed the world's most urgent humanitarian crisis in the impoverished Arab state which is struggling with a starvation and cholera epidemic, according to the United Nations.

Militarily, one source predicted that "a wider campaign that involves serious coalition firepower ... makes it unlikely that the Houthis will be able to hold the city or its port for more than a few weeks".

The source, based in Hodeidah, pointed out that ferocious armed confrontations are now underway in different areas near the city's main entrances.

Citing military coalition spokesperson Colonel Turki al-Malki, the state-run Saudi Press Agency announced the deaths in Jizan province on Saturday night.

Yemen's minister of human rights Mohamad Askar summed up the dilemma.

He said the Houthi militias have been systematically attempting to smuggle money and forged passports into Yemen for use by Houthi leaders and their families to travel outside Yemen.

Hodeidah is a critical point for nearly 80 percent of aid entering Yemen, which is in a situation the United Nations has called the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
