U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo walks with U.S. General Vincent K. Brooks, commander of United States Forces Korea, upon his arrival at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, June 13, 2018. Some 17,500 American and 50,000 South Korean troops participated previous year.
Logically, Trump should receive no credit if you believe he brought us to the brink of war with North Korea and then pulled us back.
Pompeo contradicted some claims from North Korean state media about what the process would look like.
The President also added that North Korea's promise to complete denuclearization "will be verified", though the document the two leaders signed did not lay out details of that process. North Korea's Kim Jong-un left Singapore at around 11:20 PM yesterday, . and he is expected to have arrived in North Korea this morning.
"Kim Jong Un has proved to be a pretty ruthless leader in North Korea, and I'm not sure this sort of speed dating of a 45-minute one-on-one meeting ... would suggest that there's nothing to be concerned about", he said. He says Trump and Kim Jong Un had a "blunt conversation" about changes needed for North Korea to rejoin the world community.
Kim wants American troops to withdraw from the Korean peninsula; Trump has indicated a readiness to draw down the 27,000 personnel stationed in South Korea and has made it clear that he would prefer to withdraw all troops from that country. Already, North Korea has criticized the US and South Korea's military drills, saying they're not helpful for peace talks. The talks followed on from an inter-Korean summit in April at which Moon and Kim agreed to defuse tension and cease "hostile acts".
"The summit created this enormous historic opportunity for us to move forward and will fundamentally really shape the relationship between the United States and North Korea", Pompeo said.
South Korea and the USA forces themselves were shocked by the news, but North Korea and China both seized on this concession.

There were worries, especially in Tokyo and Seoul, which have huge US military presences, about Trump agreeing to halt USA military exercises with South Korea, which the North has long claimed were invasion preparations. While there may be some truth to that assertion, it is unlikely to be the entire story; North Koreans are long suffering while the regime, like others of its kind in the past, in all likelihood has hardly been touched by the new sanctions. Tokyo is working on arranging a meeting between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Kim with one possibility including the premier's visit to Pyongyang around August, the Yomiuri newspaper reported.

However, there was no mention of the previous United States aim of "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization" from Pyongyang. That is not going to happen.
