US looks to reassure Asian allies after North Korea summit

Meanwhile, allies and analysts were left scratching their heads over what President Trump and Kim Jong-un actually agreed to. But South Korea, Japan, and the USA have long maintained that the exercises are defensive in nature.

Sophisticated readers of The Washington Post are probably drowning in takes of what the Trump-Kim summit outcome means. She reported in April on the first summit between North and South Korea in a decade, and then on Trump's meeting with Kim. Trump showed off his new tattoo.

There were worries, especially in Tokyo and Seoul, which have huge US military presences, about Trump agreeing to halt USA military exercises with South Korea, which the North has long claimed were invasion preparations. That concession to Kim appeared to catch the Pentagon and officials in Seoul off guard, and some South Koreans were alarmed.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo walks with General Vincent K. Brooks, commander of United States Forces Korea, after arriving at Osan Air Base in South Korea Wednesday. "I think, honestly, [Kim] is going to do these things". The exercises are meant to ensure that South Korean and USA troops are ready to respond to sudden North Korean aggression. To the contrary, the conciliatory U.S. moves will enable and accelerate the implementation of inter-Korean peace.

"We're going to get denuclearization", Pompeo said at a press conference following trilateral talks with South Korea's foreign minister Kang Kyung-wha and Japan's foreign minister Tarō Kōno.

USA critics of the deal said it was short on details and that Trump had made too many concessions to Kim, especially the US leader's unexpected announcement that the United States is ending its military exercises with South Korea, long an irritant to North Korea.

The joint statement released Tuesday was scant on the details, leaving the agreement between Trump and Kim vague.

President Donald Trump expressed admiration for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's firm grip of his country during an interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier aboard Air Force One.

Russian Federation has encouraged de-escalation talks between the U.S. and North Korea.

Deputy director of Human Rights Watch's Asia division Phil Robertson criticised Mr Trump for putting little or no emphasis on the human rights of North Koreans. No longer - sleep well tonight!' Ron Bonjean, also a Republican strategist, said voters were more likely to be influenced if there was serious and measurable progress closer to the election.

Pompeo insisted North Korea was committed to giving up its nuclear arsenal but said it would "be a process, not an easy one".

For South Korea particularly, the suspension of the annual military exercises came as a surprise. "President for life. No, he's great", Trump said, referring to Xi.

Trump's own chest-thumping tweet seemed reminiscent of the "Mission Accomplished" banner flown behind President George W. Bush in 2003 when he spoke aboard a Navy ship following the USA invasion of Iraq.

That discussion between Putin and Trump reportedly happened in summer 2017.

In his post-summit press conference, Trump made the surprise announcement that the United States would halt joint military exercises with its security ally Seoul - a concession Pyongyang has sought for decades. Trump cast that decision as a cost-saving measure, but also called the exercises "inappropriate" while talks continue. "He's an incredible guy", Trump said.

Yet even as USA and South Korean officials sought to parlay the momentum from the dramatic summit into more progress on the nuclear issue, there were persistent questions about whether Trump had given away too much in return for too little.

Without military exercises, the massive installation of troops will wither. Defense Secretary James Mattis' chief spokeswoman, Dana W. White, told reporters he was "in full alignment" with Trump.
