  • Hundreds Protest In Cities Across U.S. Against Trump's Immigrant Family Separations

The Trump administration has said the tactic is used to deter immigration but as immigrants seeking asylum are often fleeing unsafe situations in their home countries, they will resort to illegal methods of getting their children into the country.

"The children can be taken care of quickly, beautifully, and immediately", President Trump said Friday.

"I hate the children being taken away", Trump told reporters at the White House later Friday.

On Friday, The Trump administration released new numbers on how many families have been separated at the southwest border after parents are prosecuted for coming into the US illegally. "We can and must remember that immigrant children are still children; they need our protection, not prosecution".

The rallies come as the Trump administration has made a decision to refer for federal prosecution anyone who crosses into the United States illegally, a more aggressive stance than previous administrations have taken. While protecting our borders is important, we can and must do better as a government, and as a society, to find other ways to ensure that safety.

The rallies are organized by Families Belong Together, or Familias Unidas No Divididas, in cities such as Washington, Los Angeles and Austin, Texas.

"This is a family event more than a protest", Wiggins said.

The rallies have also been promoted by MoveOn.org, the progressive advocacy group, as well as celebrities such as Lin-Manuel Miranda and Debra Messing.

"If you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you and that child will be separated from you as required by law". The change means that adults coming across the border with children will be separated as the parents await their criminal proceedings.

Jess Morales Rocketto, political director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, said the "outrage and opposition will only keep growing if the administration continues this cruelty of separating families". "We are calling for immediate reforms and an end to this barbarism".

A coalition of four rights groups and legal organizations submitted a complaint to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights - a body of the Organization of American States - asking it to "immediately stop a human rights and humanitarian crisis perpetrated by the US government in the Texas-Mexico border".

"The more and more I learn about it, the more and more mad and sad I become", said Julio Acosta, a volunteer with Families Belong Together. "And I still have a little bit of faith that they're not being raped or starved or beaten, but you never know".
