Toronto police released the video of the theft, which is believed to have occurred around 5 a.m. on Sunday, before the exhibition opened.

Right around dawn Sunday, an unidentified person stole into an art exhibition space in Toronto.

A print by Banksy valued at $45,000 was snatched from an art exhibition in Toronto's West End curated by Steve Lazarides, the artist's former dealer.

Now, law enforcement is seeking assistance in finding a man "described as wearing glasses, black jacket, green camouflage baseball hat, blue jeans rolled at the cuff, grey running shoes, glasses".

The stolen piece is "Trolley Hunters", which depicts a group of Indigenous people stalking shopping carts in tall grass, said Corey Ross, president of Starvox Entertainment, a company that helped put on the show.

The eminent street artist's work was valued at $35,000 (€30,195), according to police.

In the video, a man enters the exhibit, picks up the print and goes out the door clutching the art piece. It displays more than 80 works. He passes through two large galleries in the midst of being installed before arriving at a wall hung with several framed prints. Meanwhile, a general-admission ticket to attend the exhibit costs about $25.

Banksy artworks often appear overnight, but they don't tend to disappear, as a print from an exhibition in Canada has done. Lazarides, who stopped working with Banksy in 2009, defended the exhibition. "She said the thief may have taken only one Banksy piece out of fear of discovery".
