Bannon Says Trump Doesn't Have to `Justify' Border Separations

First lady Melania Trump, in a rare foray into policy matters, said Sunday though a spokeswoman that the USA must be a country that "governs with heart".

In May, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a "zero tolerance" policy in which all those apprehended entering the United States illegally, including those seeking asylum, would be criminally charged, which generally leads to children being separated from their parents.

President Donald Trump repeated a false claim in a tweet Saturday that blames Democrats for the policy of separating immigrant parents from their children upon crossing the southern border between the USA and Mexico. Department of Homeland Security officials said that at least 2,000 children have been separated from their parents since it began implementing the policy in late April.

On Friday, the Department of Homeland Security said almost 2,000 children were separated from their families and put into shelters between April 19 and May 31.

The Trump administration argues that the Flores settlement means children must be separated from their parents because they can not be held in custody with their parents who face prosecution for crossing the border illegally.

Similarly, First Lady Melania Trump released a statement saying "she believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart".

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said earlier this week that executive, not legislative, action is key in ending the "barbaric" policy.

Such a situation could have long-term, devastating effects on young children, who are likely to develop what's called toxic stress in their brain once separated from caregivers or parents they trusted.

"We make decisions based on the ability to detain and the ability of courts to take these cases, but we no longer exempt categories or classes of individuals", a DHS official said.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders cited the Bible to defend a border policy that has separated children from their parents. He wouldn't use the term "illegal aliens" to refer to undocumented immigrants, she said, and he wouldn't "pit one group against one another in the struggle for justice". So the Trump administration's policy, which it announced last month, is the fault of an imaginary law that Democrats, who are in the minority in both houses of Congress, passed at some imaginary point in the past and now refuse to change.

Trump is scheduled to go to Capitol Hill on Tuesday at 5:30 pm to speak with House Republicans about immigration reform.

On Saturday, Trump was more direct: "Democrats can fix their forced family breakup at the Border by working with Republicans on new legislation, for a change!" "That is traumatising to the children, who are innocent victims".

Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, accused the administration of using the children as "mortar" to build Trump's border wall. "And so he went to a zero tolerance policy", Bannon said. "I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the goal of order".

In an election year in which Democrats appear to have an advantage on voter enthusiasm, Republicans can ill afford to alienate any voters this fall, particularly their most passionate supporters.

It further says: "To pretend that separated children do not grow up with the shrapnel of this traumatic experience embedded in their minds is to disregard everything we know about child development, the brain, and trauma".
