  • Mexico's Hirving Lozano celebrates his goal during the group F match against Germany at the 2018 football World Cup in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow Russia Sunday

Even though Germany outshot Mexico 25-12, had 61 percent possession and completed 519 passes to Mexico's 224, El Tri was the most risky team for much of the night. That's why the first half looked the way it did.

On the way to that latter title, Germany saw off Mexico, who have themselves grown under the tutelage of Juan Carlos Osorio, in charge since 2015.

'I completely believe in my players and I believe that with the midfielders we have we can dispute the possession. "We are aware that we need to improve our game", 2014 World Cup victor Toni Kroos said this week.

'I think they all know how good they are.

Germany registered 25 shots to Mexico's 12, but many were from long range and failed to seriously test Ochoa.

Mexico on Sunday caused arguably the biggest upset of World Cup 2018 so far when they beat Germany 1-0 in an absorbing contest thanks to a superbly-taken first-half goal from Hirving Lozano at the Luzhnki Stadium in Russian Federation.

"They defended quite well, the game was very open in the first half".

Mexico has competed in the Fifa World Cup since the sporting event kicked off in 1930, but the highest they have ever advanced is to the quarter-finals in 1986 and 1970.

Lozano, a 22-year-old forward from the Dutch league nicknamed "Chucky, " got Mexico going with a deflected shot over the bar in the first minute.

Germany forward Thomas Muller said his team are under significant pressure following their 1-0 loss to Mexico on Sunday.

"We need to focus on our strong points, which we haven't been able to do in our last couple of games".

Fielding eight players from their 2014 winning side, Germany showed little resistance as Mexico only missed out on winning by a greater margin by wasting several counter attacks in the last 20 minutes. The Germans were being dominated in midfield and every time the ball broke in the centre, the Mexicans swarmed in numbers.

Despite a plethora of depth and talent - a second string German team won the Confederations Cup a year ago - the German side arrived in Moscow Sunday on the back of a poor run of form.

"You had the feeling that the ball just wouldn't go in anyhow", Loew said.

He took to the field as a substitute towards the end of the match against Germany, notching an appearance in a fifth World Cup.

"We had drawn up a plan six months back or so". Due to injuries, we had to change some of our protagonists, but we always thought of having two fast players on the wing, " Osorio said.
