  • AMD Tempts Intel i7-8086K Prize Winners to Trade-In Their CPU

Regardless, those who do swap their Intel Core silicon for an AMD Threadripper chip will gain 10 cores and quad-channel memory, not to mention quite a bit of resale value.

Remember how Intel had recently debuted its "special" Core i7-8086K at Computex 2018?

Before lucky winners of Intel's chips get too excited, though, there's a pretty big catch: While cash-rich Intel gave away 8,086 of the processors across the globe, the somewhat more financially strapped AMD is opening its trade-in programme to just 40 - and they must be located in the US.

"We appreciate the advancements they [Intel] have helped drive with the x86 architecture over the last four decades", AMD says in a press release on its website. However, since the Chinese testers were limited to a standard water cooler, when overclocked at 4.12 GHz, the AMD chip scored 6399, which is considerably behind the 28-core from Intel OC-ed to 5 GHz that managed to score 7334 points. "But, we're ready to take it from here", writes AMD.

You can check out the official announcement page here, which is where further information will be provided. AMD just couldn't let this opportunity to troll its rival slide, doubling down on its top-of-the-line processors by offering the chance to switch over to Threadripper 1950X instead. To be selected, you'll need to be one of the first 40 people to complete a series of steps, which the company says it will explain on June 25, at 1pm EDT.

"That's why we're giving 40 performance-hungry enthusiasts in the USA an opportunity to celebrate the next 40 years of high-performance computing by trading in their commemorative processor prize for our CPU that enables you to work, play and create with heavy metal".

Similar to the Ryzen 7 2700X, AMD's Threadripper 2990X will reportedly offer a maximum boost clock speed of 4.2GHz and a base frequency of 3.0GHz, allowing the CPU to maintain a TDP of 250W, a 70W increase over their 1st Generation Threadripper 1950X 16-core processor. Only 40 Threadripper 1950Xs are on offer for the exchange, given out on a first come, first serve basis. THE Threadripper 1950X boasts a baked-in "game mode" that tweaks the chip's performance but still leaves it lagging behind a several of Intel's latest eighth-gen processors.
