  • US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announce America's withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council at the Department of State

China, which has on multiple occasions voiced support for multilateral institutions abandoned by U.S. President Donald Trump, portrayed the council as "a major body.to promote the realisation of human rights".

For that matter, what's the point of the United Nations, with the seven permanent members on the Security Council, with views as varied as Russia, China and the United States, having a veto right over everyone else. "The Human Rights Council has become an exercise in shameless hypocrisy, with numerous world's worst human-rights abuses going ignored and some of the world's most serious offenders sitting on the council itself", Pompeo reveals.

"It is unfortunate that your letter sought to undermine our attempts to improve the Human Rights Council".

"All delegations attach great importance to this body", said Chinese ambassador to the U.N.in Geneva, Yu Jianhua.

South Africa remains firmly committed to the United Nations and the Human Rights Council and will do its part to ensure that the organ continues to serve as a beacon of hope.

Diplomats from several countries made the comments in a brief break in the Human Rights Council's regular schedule on Wednesday to allow for comments about the Trump administration's decision Tuesday to pull out from the 47-member council.

The president has, in the past, been critical of the council, and has accused it of showing a bias against Israel, an ally of the U.S. It added that the US criticism of the council for failing to make changes advocated by Washington appears "cynical".

Israel is the only country in the world whose rights record comes up for discussion at every council session, under "Item 7" on the agenda. "Rather than altering those practices, it is now threatening United States companies, workers and farmers who have done nothing wrong".

Bolton, a former ambassador to the U.N. during President George W. Bush's administration, said that the United States is self-governing, and that it does not need the advice of the United Nations or other worldwide bodies on how to do so.

Russia's United Nations mission responded in a statement that the USA had tried but failed to turn the Council into an "obedient instrument for advancing their interests and punishing the countries it dislikes".
