US Open: A Look Back at Shinnecock Hills

  • SOUTHAMPTON NY- JUNE 14 Tiger Woods of the United States tips his hat after playing his shot from the first tee during the first round of the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club

One year after Koepka overpowered the wide fairways of Erin Hills in a U.S. Open remembered for low scoring, he navigated his way through the brutal conditions of Shinnecock Hills and closed with a 2-under 68 to become the first repeat champion in 29 years.

Koepka's birdie at the par-5 16th stretched his lead to two shots over Tommy Fleetwood, who tied the U.S. Open single-round record with a 63.

The winds increased - unexpectedly, the U.S. Golf Association said, even if its course setup sheet for the third round indicated otherwise - and the scores of the pairings over the final two hours rose like a helium-filled balloon. I mean, you want to always use them in your favour.

'Unfortunately, they've lost the golf course. The Saturday scoring average was 75.087, which is actually almost a shot lower than it was for Thursday's round. They trail by only two strokes late in the afternoon, with Johnson and Koepka tied at 1 over par.

"I felt like I played pretty well", said the No. 1 player in the world. I had a chance. Despite two missed cuts in four British Open starts, it would seem unwise to sleep on his chances next month at Carnoustie.

The 118th US Open will be remembered for a tumultuous Saturday when conditions and testing pin placements turned the historic Shinnecock Hills layout into a brutally punishing test and led to severe criticism of organizer the USGA. Reed birdied his first three holes, five of his first eight, and went out in 4-under 31.

He went from behind the 13th green all the way off the front. Tony Finau and Daniel Berger faced the same scenario.

Dustin Johnson staggered around Shinnecock Hills like a punch-drunk boxer, reeling from one troubled shot to the next to the next. After a par on No. 4, Reed found the bunker on the par-four fifth. We know that it's not going to be Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day or Tiger Woods - all cut after the second round - but after that, it's virtually impossible.

Mickelson suggested he would not have finished the round if he had to play from where the putt on the 13th green was headed before he hit it while moving.

Mickelson had a one-stroke lead heading into the 18th hole at Winged Foot.

"The best players in the world are up there trying to win a U.S. Open, and watching them down the stretch, you've got nothing but respect for how well Brooks did, just to hole the putts at the right time", Fleetwood said. And inevitably Fleetwood conceded that the seven-foot putt he missed for one last birdie on the 18th green is the one that will linger longest in the memory bank lurking inside what is surely the hairiest head in top-level golf. Rather than waiting for it to stop, he broke into a trot and when the ball was about 15 feet below the cup, and still in motion, he hit it back up the slope and it came to rest above the hole.

That pushed him well up the leaderboard and gave him a shot on a vastly different Sunday.

In 1975, Lou Graham won the U.S. Open after trailing by 11 shots at the 36-hole mark.

"Look, I don't mean disrespect by anybody", Mickelson said.

And typical of an old-styled U.S. Open, there were plenty of complaints.

It was the players with later tee-times who suffered. We're extremely close. I love the guy to death.
