European Union levies tariffs on $3.2B on USA goods over metals duties

The European Union will begin charging import duties of 25 percent on a range of US products on Friday, in response to U.S tariffs imposed on EU steel and aluminum early this month, the European Commission said on Wednesday.

On March 1, President Donald Trump announced that the United States would be imposing a 25 percent global tariff on all steel imports to the US and a 10 percent global tariff on all aluminum imports.

Officials in Brussels, spearheading the member states' response, said the list of USA imports that will now face an extra duty at the European Union border includes steel and aluminium products, agricultural goods and a variety of other products.

Ms Malmstrom said: "We did not want to be in this position".

A separate 10 percent tariff will be imposed on imports of playing cards.

Last week, the United States imposed 25% tariffs on $50bn of Chinese products, with Beijing immediately retaliating by matching the USA levy.

"Our response is measured, proportionate and fully in line with WTO rules".

Mexico has announced it will, in response, impose tariffs on United States imports, including pork bellies, apples, grapes, cheeses and flat steel, among other products.

Brussels first drew up the list in March when US President Donald Trump initially floated the idea of 25 percent tariffs on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminium.

Mexico has already put tariffs on USA products that include steel and pork.

President Trump insists his tariffs are needed to protect American workers and has said the European Union treats the United States "very unfairly".

"The United States has initiated a trade war and violated market regulations, and is harming the interests of not just the people of China and the USA, but of the world".
