  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel attends a news conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg after a meeting at the chancellery in Berlin Friday

Merkel and Macron jointly stressed the need for an EU-wide solution to the migration crisis that is now casting a shadow over cooperation between European neighbors, according to German news agency dpa. He had suggested he could implement the proposals unilaterally, in defiance of both European regulations and the chancellor.

According to the newspaper, Seehofer intends to give Merkel two weeks on the solution of common European problem of the issue of refugees. Merkel must now attempt to build a solution with European Union partners by the beginning of July.

The Merkel party, Christian Democratic Union, CDU, and Seehofer, Christian Social Union, CSU, are twinned formations for decades and toger y form conservative bloc that shares government in Berlin with Social Democrats.

CSU leader Horst Seehofer, who is also interior minister, has drawn up a plan under which Germany would turn away migrants who have already registered in other European Union states.

The tweet comes days after Trump defended his "great relationship" with German Chancellor Angela Merkel after contentious-looking photos of the two from the G7 conference surfaced.

The survey found that 62 percent of respondents were in favor of turning back undocumented migrants at the border, in line with the stance of Seehofer who is openly challenging Merkel. The CSU is determined to show that it's tough on migration as it faces a challenging October state election in Bavaria, and argues that that is the best way to cut support for the far-right Alternative for Germany.

End of the road for Merkel?

"Merkel's argument for Europe is substantial - but not popular". In his previous job as Bavarian governor, Seehofer was one of the leading critics of Merkel's decision in 2015 to leave Germany's borders open as migrants streamed across the Balkans.

Her position as chancellor is now in question, but it remains unclear precisely how the situation will develop.

How did we get here?

More than one million people entered Germany in the first year of the asylum policy, a majority of them coming up through Bavaria, which shares an 800km border with Austria. Earlier in the day, he issued a series of tweets and claimed that crime has risen in Germany as a result of migration.

A government spokesman said Merkel was also seeking talks with some European Union members before the leaders summit but denied a Bild report that she was trying to set up a special summit.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her French counterpart, President Emmanuel Macron, met this Tuesday to finalise plans for sweeping reforms which will affect the 19 member states that use the euro currency which would come into force in 2021.

"Whoever knows Europe, realizes this is no easy task", Merkel told reporters Monday, adding "we have a particular responsibility" to refugees. And then: "We don't want what is happening with immigration in Europe to happen with us!".

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said it would be "very hard to reach a solution" on hosting asylum seekers next week.

The prospects of Merkel reaching a deal on migration with Conte on Monday would appear slim.
