Instagram launches IGTV with videos up to one hour long

In September, Instagram said it had some 800 million monthly active users. The company also announced that it has amassed 1 billion users. First, Instagram is now a global community of one billion! Since our launch in 2010, we've watched with amazement as the community has flourished and grown. We'll let you know when the Android app shows up.

Watch out, YouTube. Instagram today launched a new app for watching long-form vertical video on your phone, IGTV. IGTV is different in a few ways.

With IGTV, Instagram moves closer to taking on Google's YouTube and Snapchat. Anyone can post their own videos to IGTV via the app or the web and create their own "channel".

Another unique feature of this app: it has been formatted so that all videos play vertically. Like cable TV, you just turn it on and mindlessly consume all the content.

"You don't have to search to start watching content from people you already follow on Instagram and others you might like based on your interests", Systrom wrote in a blog post today. When you open the app it automatically starts playing videos from people you follow.

"With all of the cat videos, how do you find the creators you guys all love?" founder-CEO Kevin Systrom asked the crowd at the launch, according to Deadline.

IGTV could not only evolve as a monetising platform but also as a platform which supports viewership. Creators will have their own dedicated channels, too.

Instagram is targeting mobile users with IGTV, it's both a new app and a new platform - though you'll be able to see IGTV in the Instagram app itself.

Instagram boasts that IGTV will feature videos from creators like Lele Pons, former Vine star King Bach, and Fortnite streamer Ninja, but like YouTube, it'll also allow for anyone to post videos. It is especially popular with younger people. Unlike the Instagram app, videos made with IGTV can last up to an hour.

The differentiating factor between them is that everyone will be given access to vertical videos, not just the social media's elite. However, the discover feature is available when you swipe up.

IGTV won't be an app exclusive to the verified accounts or big accounts.
