Cesc Fabregas has played down the contribution of Cristiano Ronaldo at the World Cup and said that Argentina's struggles are not all Lionel Messi's fault.

"So here at Argentina, they expect he needs to score three goals every single game, like he does for Barcelona".

Argentina's struggles in Russian Federation should come as no surprise after their pre-tournament preparations were wrecked by controversy and poor form, coupled with a reliance on a top-heavy, limited squad.

"He is the coach of the Argentina team and what he made a decision to do is play his friend and this is the result of putting your friends". They should be proud to have Messi in their national team.

"What's happening to the team right now is what has happened to Argentina in these last four disgraceful years: anarchy, no leadership from the players, coaches or directors".

Martino's replacement, Edgardo Bauza, ultimately helped convince Messi to reverse his decision weeks later, the Barcelona star conceding his "love" of his country was "too great".

Messi cut an isolated figure as Argentina fell to a humbling 3-0 defeat to Croatia in their Group D clash on Thursday, making a premature exit a distinct possibility for the two-time champions.

Meanwhile, his great rival Lionel Messi saw his penalty saved as his Argentina side were held by a resilient Iceland a day later in Moscow.

Mario Kempes -who was part of Argentina's1978 World Cup-winning team - shared Zabaleta's disbelief, accusing the players of putting in a "shameful" performance.

Aside from the loss to Croatia and an opening-game draw against Iceland, Argentina lost in the 2014 World Cup final to Germany in extra time. They've been bad when adhering to Jorge Sampaoli's tactics and bad when marginalizing them. "They were really poor".

Argentina have one point from two games and now need to beat Nigeria in their final group game and hope that other results go their way to proceed into the last 16. You are the best player, when a team fails what you ask of the best player is that you dig deep and you couldn't even do that. It's not particularly interesting simply to say Argentina is bad.
