  • Facebook Messenger Kids Expands to Canada, Peru; Gains New Features

Now, more than one parent can have control over a child's Messenger account.

San Francisco: Despite call for withdrawal by experts, Facebook has chose to expand the reach of Messenger Kids by introducing the video calling and messaging app designed for children under 13 to families in Canada and Peru. Messenger Kids is now available for download in Canada and Peru after being USA-exclusive since December 2017. The pledge is a list of guiding principles that encourages responsible use of Messenger Kids. It is free to download and is also created to be compliant with the Children's Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA). No matter where users are based, the app is available in English, Spanish, and French - all popular languages in the countries where the app is now available.

Some of the new child safety features Facebook said would debut at a later date include an online pledge that kids must sign before using the service.

The Serbian football association reportedly complained to FIFA before the game about the Kosovo flag on one of Shaqiri's boots. The online version of the Serbian newspaper Blic wrote on June 23 that the gesture "shamefully provoked our fans".

Facebook has been working with Canadian non-profit organization Media Smarts to focus on the global expansion and promoting digital literacy. Both the parents have to read and agree to the pledge which promotes being kind, being respectful, being safe, and having fun.

"This is part of the "Missions" section of the app where kids learn how to use certain features like starting a video call and sending a photo", Loren Cheng, Facebook's Product Management Director and Tarunya Govindarajan, Product Manager at the social networking site, said in a statement. The good news is the app is now available in two more countries - Canada and Peru, and with new features in tow too.

The Public Interest Advocacy Centre, a Canadian non-profit, also wrote a letter to Zuckerberg and Facebook's Canadian head of public policy, Kevin Chan, asking that the app not be released.
