The study co-author Mahee Gilbert-Ouimet, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto who has been active in this field for 12 years, said, "If you think about all the unpaid work they do on their off-hours, like household chores, for example, they simply do more than men, and that can be stressful, and stress negatively impacts your health". The results showed that overworking among women was associated with 63% higher risk of diabetes whereas incidence of diabetes in men was found mainly among older age groups, and those who were obese.

The same can not be said for men, Canadian researchers found in a study published Tuesday in the journal BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care.

Too many working hours give women increased diabetes risk, says a latest research disclosed in the journal of BMJ Open Diabetes Research and Care.

"The deleterious effect of long work hours observed among women of this study was robust to adjustment for sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics, other work-related exposures, and health conditions including hypertension, arthritis, and anxiety symptoms", the authors explained.

You're Probably Not Washing Your Hands Right, Study Says
After a thorough observation, the researchers found that only 3 percent followed the necessary steps to properly wash their hands. The researchers found that one mistake most people make is not washing with soap and water for the required 20 seconds .

"I was surprised to see the somewhat protective effect of longer working hours among men".

Another potential reason for the gender difference may have to do with the type of work men reported; in the study, about a third of the men working long hours said they spent that time doing a combination of sitting, standing and walking, compared to only 8% of the women who worked longer hours. They suggest that work stress in women with domestic responsibilities. This study focused on women to try and provide a more comprehensive picture of work and diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is on the rise. It is estimated that about 439 million adults will be living with diabetes by 2030 across globe - an increase of 50 per cent on the figures for 2010. Considering the rapid and substantial increase of diabetes prevalence, identifying modifiable risk factors is of major importance. A study performed in 2006 even brought to light similar risks. But a limitation to the current analysis included the fact that work hours were only measured at one point during the 12-year follow-up; any possible employment changes during this time were left unaccounted for.

Long working hours may prompt a chronic stress response in the body, increasing the risk of hormonal problems and insulin resistance, they suggested.
