New study says eating nuts might boost male fertility

The findings are consistent with improvements in other recent studies, reporting that diets rich in omega-3, antioxidants, and folate produce better sperm.

The men who consumed nuts every day saw a significant boost in their sperm count.

The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (Eshre) taking place in Barcelona, Spain.

The quality and function of their sperm-including changes on a molecular level-were measured at the start and end of a 14-week period.

The decline has been attributed in industrialised countries to "pollution, smoking, and trends toward a western-style diet". The results of the research was presented at the 34th Annual Meeting of ESHRE in Barcelona showed that a nuts-rich diet could boost sperm count by nearly 20 percent, the vitality of sperm cells by 5 percent, their mobility by six percent and the shape and size of sperm cells by one percent. About 40 to 50 percent of infertility cases are due to infertility among men.

The investigators conclude from the study that there is a "beneficial role for chronic nut consumption in sperm quality" and nuts should be a part of male dietary recommendations.

Brazil Take On Belgium As World Cup Quarter-finals Kick Off
Given what has happened so far Brazil would have to consider themselves the favorites to win the whole thing. Brazil is favourites to win the World Cup ahead of their quarter-final against Belgium in Kazan on Friday .

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), normal sperm concentration for male fertility is greater than 15 million per millilitre with a progressive motility of 32 percent or higher, vitality of 58 percent and a normal morphology of 4 percent or more. Others followed the diet, in which nuts were included very rarely. Sperm as well as blood samples were tested for the participants.

Researchers recorded not just sperm parameters but also changes in several molecular factors, including sperm DNA fragmentation.

The Spanish authors said the study results were not on their own enough to justify urging men to eat nuts if they want to conceive.

As well as improvements in sperm count and shape, the researchers examined the quality of DNA inside the sperm.

He said the subjects in the nut group also showed a "significant reduction" in their levels of sperm DNA fragmentation, a parameter closely associated with male infertility.

"But evidence is accumulating in the literature that healthy lifestyle changes such as following a healthy dietary pattern might help conception - and of course, nuts are a key component of a Mediterranean healthy diet", he noted.
