  • We Happy Few is no longer banned in Australia

This overturns a prior ruling that effectively banned the game from sale in Australia after the board refused to give We Happy Few a rating.

Developer Compulsion Games fought back against the allegations, stating that "the whole point of the game is to reject this programming and fight back" against the mandated drugs, reminiscent of "Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, or Terry Gilliam's Brazil" thanks to its "overarching social commentary".

According to the developers, they had to go through a "great deal of effort" in order to submit an appeal and get the decision overturned.

After considering our appeal to get We Happy Few reviewed for classification, the Australian Classification Review Board has made a decision to allow the release of We Happy Few in Australia!

We Happy Few will release worldwide on 10 August 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The board took issue with the game's treatment of "Joy", a drug used to control the population within the fictional island city of Wellington Wells.

Great news, all around! The Board said "the game's drug-use mechanic making game progression less hard constitutes an incentive or reward for drug-use" and was therefore refused classification. Another big part of this announcement is that Compulsion Games was not forced to modify We Happy Few to meet the Classification Board's guidelines.

Compulsion producer Sam Abbott told Kotaku that the Board's original decision to refuse We Happy Few for classification made sense based on the information it had to go on at time. PC Players can add the game to their Steam wishlist.
