Deaths linked to a heat wave in Canada's Quebec province has almost doubled to 33 from the last count, health officials said on Thursday, as extreme weather conditions that have gripped central and eastern Canada reached their peak.

She added that the majority of the victims in the city were men aged between 53 and 85 living in vulnerable conditions and without access to air conditioning.

No deaths have been reported in other provinces.

None of the victims had air conditioning, and Kaiser said majority died inside of their homes. Health authorities reported that the number of heat casualties increased to 50 people.

Officials say none of the deaths occurred in a hospital and that the deceased were already suffering from existing health problems.

While temperatures have come down on Friday, public health officials are warning that the Quebec residents should still take precautions in the wake of a week-long heatwave that claimed at least 44 lives throughout the province.

"We're doing everything we can", Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante said.

"'Im counting on Montrealers to knock on doors, maybe of a neighbor, just to find out if the person is OK".

A smog warning is also in effect for those areas as, Environment Canada states, high concentrations of ozone are expected and will result in poor air quality.
