"The Jimny is synonymous with the Suzuki brand and to have an all-new model on its way is something worth talking about".
But what the Jimny does do is tackle the rough stuff in a way nothing else can - certainly nothing else remotely close to its price - and the new Jimny, due to arrive in the United Kingdom in 2019, promises more of that, but with an added dose of modernity.
Replacing the 1.3-liter that we've found underpowered in our test drive of the previous generation, the 1.5-liter in the all-new Jimny delivers "ample torque at low revolutions". The new version is the first major update to the model since 1998, but despite this the Jimny has earned itself a solid reputation among off-road and city auto enthusiasts. In comparison, the Jimny Sierra is bigger in all aspects, measuring 3,550 mm in length, 1,645 mm in width, and 1,730 mm height, along with a ground clearance of 210 mm.
The Jimny's interior, meanwhile, gains modern features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth. The Jimny Sierra, meanwhile, is powered by a 1.5-litre (1460cc), 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine developing 102PS of maximum power and 130Nm of peak torque paired to a 5-speed MT or a 4-speed AT.
Boot space in the new Jimny starts at 85 litres with the rear seats in use and expands to 377-litres (53 litres more than the old car) when the rear seats are folded.
Economy figures are pegged at 41.5mpg and 37.6mpg for the manual and automatic respectively, with Carbon dioxide figures of 154g/km and 170g/km. Power is sent to a part-time four-wheel drive system via a transfer case, with a brake-type limited-slip differential to optimise traction. The suspension is a rigid axle setup with coil springs both front and rear. Like its predecessor, the new Jimny is built on a ladder-frame chassis, but it now has additional crossmembers to increase rigidity. Also available, but not confirmed for Australian cars, is lane departure warning and weaving alert function (to help the driver keep alert), and high beam assist which is able to automatically switch on and off the high and low beams. We anticipate a premium on the current car's £12,999 starting tag given the Jimny's new tech, though it should still remain a small, cheap off-roader.
