Drunk seagulls taken to RSPCA centres after 'drinking discarded alcohol on beach'

09 July, 2018, 12:27 | Author: Sherman Richardson

A theory is they could be drinking leftover alcohol drinks all around the South West beaches rendering them too drunk to walk - or even fly.

Jo Daniel, an inspector with the RSPCA in Somerset, said at first they believed the gulls were suffering from botulism, but they discovered that after the birds vomited, they seemed to be fine.

RSPCA vet David Couper has treated a number of the birds as they arrived at the charity's West Hatch Wildlife Centre in Taunton, Somerset.

"The birds absolutely stink of alcohol when we collect them so now our vans smell like pubs!"

Tracking down the source is proving hard but local breweries and distilleries after being urged to check the leftovers from their production process and ensure it can not be accessed by birds and wildlife.

"I'd like to urge any local vets who see birds coming in with similar symptoms not to euthanize them but to give them a chance to recover from the effects of the alcohol".

"Drunken" seagulls were rescued by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) after they were found disoriented and confused.

The theory that they are scavenging alcohol on beaches came after firefighters had to rescue a drunk gull which had fallen off a roof in Lyme Regis, Dorset.

It is also thought possible that the gulls have scoffed grain by-products from a brewery in the area.

He said that the birds "looked terrible" while others had been "so poorly they died".

Anyone with concerns for the welfare of a bird or animal can contact the RSPCA's 24-hour helpline on 0300 1234 999 for advice or assistance.
