Starbucks says it will stop using plastic straws by 2020

The move will help Starbucks eliminate as many as 1 billion straws per year, the company said.

Starbucks said that it will begin using the strawless alternatives in Seattle and Vancouver stores by this fall, and expand to the USA and Canada, followed by other global locations, in fiscal year 2019.

Other cities, like Fort Meyers, have banned plastic straws.

By the fall, all cold coffee beverages in Seattle and Vancouver will be served with the same strawless lid now offered for the cold brew drinks.

Starbucks said the conversion will be complete by 2020. Ice-blended Frappuccinos, meanwhile, will be served with straws made of paper or compostable plastic. Vancouver will become the first Canadian city to do so in the fall of 2019.

Straws are a small contributor to the overall plastic problem, but they are an easy target since most people don't require a straw to consume a beverage. Similar proposals are being considered elsewhere, including NY and San Francisco. McDonald's said earlier this year that it would stop using plastic straws at all of its stores in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

WATCH: Plastic straw ban?

On Monday, the coffee giant became the latest company to denounce single-use plastic straws, revealing plans to ban them entirely from its stores worldwide by 2020.

A number of local governments have recently passed legislation restricting the use and distribution of plastic straws.

The mega coffee brand announced that it is slowly getting rid of plastic straws, and will serve iced drinks using a plastic lid with a teardrop-shaped opening in an effort to reduce waste and become more environmentally friendly.

"With eight million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, we can not afford to let industry sit on the sidelines", said Nicholas Mallos, director of Ocean Conservancy's Trash Free Seas program in a statement.
