Boris Johnson resigns in major Brexit blow to UK PM Theresa May

Hours later, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt was named as Johnson's replacement.

Brexit negotiator David Davis suddenly stepped down Monday after failing to secure key concessions from European Union member states after the UK's withdrawal.

Mrs May appointed junior minister Dominic Raab, a former diplomat who was a prominent campaigner for Leave in the 2016 referendum, as Mr Davis's successor.

The prime minister's official spokesman said she would fight any attempt to oust her as prime minister if the required 48 Tory MPs called for a contest.

"Brexit should be about opportunity and hope", Johnson said in a resignation letter.

Loud applause could be heard at the end of the 1922 Committee meeting, which the PM attended for just over an hour. After the vote, he famously said that his position on Brexit negotiations amounted to: "I am pro having my cake and pro eating it".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Mrs May should make way for a Labour administration if her Government can not get its act together quickly.

The value of the British pound dropped on global markets after Johnson's announcement, having risen after the announcement Friday that a Cabinet deal on Brexit had been agreed.

The UK is due to leave the European Union on 29 March 2019, but the two sides have yet to agree how trade will work between the UK and the EU afterwards.

The Prime Minister's latest political drama began late on Sunday night when Davis announced his decision to leave his post, declaring he could not support May's plan for Brexit agreed plan.

"It seems to me we're giving too much away, too easily, and that's a unsafe strategy at this time", Davis said in a BBC radio interview Monday morning.

Johnson, who has cut a flamboyant figure in British politics for decades, served as one of the loudest - and most misleading - voices advocating for Brexit before the referendum. The mess caused by Brexit is the biggest problem in the history of EU-UK relations.

Johnson quit on Monday over May's plan for Brexit, which includes a free-trade area for goods but little detail on the approach to services.

Mrs May came under fire from Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, who said she "has no authority left and is incapable of delivering Brexit".

However critics, including Mr Davis, felt that it meant that the plan would tie the United Kingdom too closely to European Union decision-making in the future, and would give the United Kingdom parliament only "illusory" powers.

Hunt told LBC Radio in October 2017, however, that he had changed his mind on the issue, in part because of what he said was disappointing "arrogance" in the EU's behavior during negotiations.
