BREXIT BREAKDOWN: UK Foreign Minister QUITS, Theresa May Facing REVOLT

10 July, 2018, 08:53 | Author: Wade Massey

It remains to be seen whether the dual resignation of two of May's most senior government ministers will trigger a Tory leadership contest - or even a general election - but for the moment one thing that's certain is the internet's response to Johnson getting on his bike has been damning. "The Prime Minister thanks Boris for his work".

While International Development Secretary Penny Morduant immediately welcomed the decision saying Rabb is "highly capable, across the issues, attention to detail, Leave supporter and pragmatist", others said Davis' resignation has plunged Britain into "absolute chaos". Steve Baker, a junior Brexit minister, resigned along with Davis.

British Prime Minister Theresa May dug in her heels Monday after the resignation of two top government ministers over Brexit negotiations whipped up a storm that threatened to topple her fragile minority government.

The resignations came just days after May announced she had finally united her quarrelsome government behind her plan for a divorce deal with the EU.

Johnson gave a scathing verdict on Theresa May's Brexit plans tonight as his resignation letter said the "Brexit dream is dying, suffocated by needless self doubt".

In response to questions about whether the government is in "meltdown", May's spokesman said "it is not".

GBP/USD stumbles at 1.33 as Brexit continues to fracture the UK's parliament
Under Conservative Party rules, a leadership race could be triggered if at least 48 of her MPs declared their support for one. Leaving the gathering, leading Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg said he did not think there would be a confidence vote over Mrs May.

There was no immediate statement from Johnson, another loud pro-Brexit voice within May's divided government.

"Two secretaries of state have resigned and still we are no clearer as to what our future relationship with our nearest neighbors and biggest trading partners will be".

But in reality, she will be at the mercy of her party. Leading proponents of Brexit called on her to abandon the deal struck with the Cabinet last Friday at Chequers, her country retreat outside London.

The BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg said there were potentially "dozens" of Tory rebel MPs opposed to Mrs May's Chequers compromise.

Instead May was tonight scrambling to shore up her ailing Premiership amid fierce rumours she is set to face a no confidence vote, possibly within hours.

Under Conservative Party rules, a confidence vote in a leader can be triggered if 48 Conservative lawmakers request one.
