Donald Trump's scandal-hit environment chief Scott Pruitt resigns

  • Scott Pruitt has resigned as EPA chief President Trump announced Thursday

"I have accepted the resignation of Scott Pruitt as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency", Trump wrote on Twitter Thursday afternoon, while praising Pruitt's work.

Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt resigned Thursday amid a number of scandals alleging corruption, nepotism and unprofessional behavior by the former Oklahoma attorney general.

Pruitt, Oklahoma's attorney general at the time of his EPA appointment, had embraced the perks of office in Washington. It's this notoriety and insider savvy that could make Wheeler unsafe; unlike Pruitt, who was relatively new to Washington when he took the job leading the EPA, Wheeler could continue to work closely with old friends. The Clean Power Plan aimed to cut carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants almost one-third by 2030. To do so, the plan calls for, among other initiatives, phasing out coal plants with clean energy sources such as wind and solar power.

Like Trump, Pruitt voiced skepticism about mainstream climate science and was a fierce critic of the Paris climate agreement.

Adding that she believes the sustainable-environment ideology continues to be threatened by the Trump administration, Ortiz said the group is not waiting for the federal government to come to the rescue of the planet. "Our understanding is that Mr. Wheeler will not be involved in any decision on this Energy Fuels proposal".

Senator Bernie Sanders, Democrat from Vermont: "Scott Pruitt was the worst EPA administrator in the history of the agency".

"All these things that people might not have an understanding about, really what it does is it speaks to the over 200,000 people in our country who die prematurely from air pollution".

Environmental groups, such as Clean Power Lake County, have seen Pruitt as the man who has systematically destabilized the very organization he was chosen to lead in order to carry out President Donald Trump's agenda to roll back environmental regulations imposed under former President Barack Obama.

Andrew Wheeler was confirmed by the Senate in April to be the EPA's deputy administrator, but he was criticized by Democrats for his past ties to energy lobbyists.

"I have no doubt that Andy will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda", the United States leader tweeted. "We have made tremendous progress and the future of the EPA is very bright!" the president said in a pair of tweets.

As a lobbyist with the firm Faegre Baker Daniel, one of his major clients has been the nation's largest private coal company, Murray Energy, whose CEO Bob Murray has been a generous Republican donor and Trump supporter. Inhofe expressed his support for his former staffer on Thursday, calling Wheeler "the ideal choice" to serve as acting EPA administrator.

During his time as a congressional staffer, Wheeler worked as a senior aide to Republican Sen.

He was also instrumental previous year in lobbying Trump to withdraw the United States from the global 2015 Paris climate accord to combat global warming.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Wheeler said that his first communication to agency staff upon taking over was meant to reassure officials that business will continue as normal.

Pruitt is the fifth member of President Trump's cabinet to resign or be fired.
