Eurosceptic British ministers quit in blow to May's plan — BREXIT

  • Theresa May with Angela Merkel in Berlin on the eve of the Chequers meeting that the prime minister hopes will result in cabinet backing for her Brexit plans

British Prime Minister Theresa May has secured government agreement for her Brexit stance, which envisages free trade area for goods and seems to have appeased Brexit supporters in her cabinet.

May replaced him with another Brexit campaigner, junior minister Dominic Raab.

"While we continue to hope and advocate for the best outcome possible, we are simply being prudent by preparing a contingency".

Fellow backbencher Andrew Bridgen was far more forthright, saying he would not back the deal even "if the European Union were paying us". May met German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Thursday to restate her wish to negotiate a deep trade and security partnership after Brexit, her spokesman said.

"I can't support the offer which emerged at Chequers - I think it's a breach of the red lines, in fact the offer is so poor that I couldn't support it even if the European Union were paying us for it", he said.

Their analysis produced five different scenarios based on three key factors: whether the UK is part of the EU Customs Union or has a bespoke customs deal; whether or not the UK is in the Single Market, has a bespoke single market deal, or no deal at all; and whether or not the UK has to adopt WTO tariffs in the event of no bespoke deal being struck with the EU.

As she held the crisis talks with her ministers, the chief executive of European planemaker Airbus, Tom Enders, accused the government of having "no clue or at least consensus on how to executeBrexit without severe harm".

"That is not something that this country voted for, it is not what the prime minister promised", he told BBC radio.

First Davis and then Johnson appear to have done so, and their resignations have come at a critical and highly sensitive time for May.

She thought she had done enough to move on with that fraught process at the meeting at her Chequers country residence.

David Davis has warned the United Kingdom is giving away "too much away, too easily" in the exit talks but backed Theresa May to remain Prime Minister after his dramatic resignation rocked her premiership. Mr Johnson's allies said on Saturday he decided not to quit as he wanted to remain in government to fight for the kind of Brexit he campaigned for.

"If the Brexit Secretary could not support them they cannot genuinely be delivering Brexit".

Tories are being invited to briefings about the plans, with the Prime Minister set to address Conservative MPs at a meeting in Parliament on Monday. Some lawmakers have already expressed their misgivings.

"Drop your red lines and secure a decent deal, one that is to the benefit of the working people of this country", general secretary Len McCluskey said in a statement.

Asked if the prime minister could survive.

The UK and the European Union have been negotiating Brexit terms for more than a year now and have been hoping to agree broad aims for their future relationship in October.

The Prime Minister spoke with Members of Parliament following the resignations, saying they should prepare for "multiple outcomes" in future talks with the European Union, including a "no deal" Brexit.

Her aides suggest the plan "offers the best of both worlds". "It was the right thing to do".

"Fantastic news", tweeted Andrea Jenkyns, a Conservative lawmaker. I take my hat off to you. That's partly because they can't be sure they have the numbers needed to defeat her.

Two senior sources confirmed Mr Davis' departure from the Cabinet. Remainers will be angry that the apparent agreement that came from Chequers has been trashed, while Leavers who had to swallow their own opposition to the proposal will feel betrayed.

Michael Gove admitted the agreement thrashed out after a marathon day of talks on Friday was not everything he had hoped for, but the environment secretary said he was a "realist" and recognised the need for compromise.

On the global markets, sterling slipped by a third of a cent against the dollar to $1.3288 in early trading.
